Brilliant German Director Tom Twyker, (Winter Sleepers, Heaven) takes on the challenging task of adapting Patrick Suskind’s bizarre captivating novel of a 16th century murderer. Young Frenchman Grenouille has such an uncanny sense of smell that he literally follows his nose into a life of murder. It’s his motivations which make him stand out and the story is a fascinating one. However some novels don’t translate well, which perhaps explains why it’s taken so long for this bestseller to make the transition, but Twyker bravely sticks to the source material and almost pulls it off. Ironically it is Dustin Hoffman’s performance which feels out of place in a cast full of Europeans. This time the Hoff’s great honker seems to have taken on more than it could sniff. (sorry). Visually rich with a climax like no other, Perfume is an odd but rare fragrance indeed.
