Great plot, bad writing // spellbinding reading // not great //

These
are some of the comments on Amazon about Underworld: Blood Enemy. My
quote for this book is: Fucking Amazing. It beats Evolution, hands down
and gives Underworld--the movie and the book, the beginning it needs.

This
book is mainly a love story between a full blood Lycan and a pure blood
vampire. A union that was forbidden. Lucian and Sonja fall in love
after he saves her from an extremely violent battle near sunrise with a
bunch of villagers, led by Brother Ambross.

Lucian and Sonja
start secretly meeting in an unused chapel. A month or so passes, and
Sonja becomes pregnant. They decide to run away, and try pretending to
live like mortals. The night of packing, they are caught. If you have
seen the movie, Underworld, then you know what happens next. But the
book describes everything in gory context. Lucian braced himself
for the blow he knew was coming, yet no amount of preparation could
have steeled him against the searing pain that raced through his body
as the whip viciously lashed his back again and again. The barbed
vertebrae tore through his ragged tunic and made ribbons of his hide,
burning his skin even as they sliced through his defenseless flesh,
paring it to the bone. The pain was unendurable.
......... The golden beam fell on Sonja, who let out a bloodcurdling scream
After escaping the castle he slowly builds his army of Lycans. And he
is successful. So successful that rumors of him and his ever increasing
army spread across the country.

And it goes on.

This book
has two storylines running together. One set in today's world of 2002
with Selene and another set about 800 years ago in the past in the year
1201. If you are looking for a Selene novel, this is not it. This is a
book mainly for werewolf fans and those wishing to know a beginning to
the excellent movie Underworld.

This book was written before
Evolution which means that some things are not correct. An example is
Marcus, he looks very very different. But these things are small and
only for picky people to bitch about. Evolution was written from a
script and as it is based on the movie, it has to be the same.

I
did find a lot of the love-love romance in Blood Enemy slightly
overdone. The dialog was sickening and pathetic at times, but the
overall story is excellent and I'd love to see it made into a movie.

Greg
Cox doesn't get deep into his characters (apart from Lucian) like he
did in the first book. There is little for us to care about the
characters, but maybe, some of this is because we know the outcome. It
is a prequel, right?

The best part is where Lucian changes without the assistance of the moon. But before that is the battle inside a silver mine! Lucian has a lot of trouble with silver in this book.

This
book is too short and is a quick and fun read, especially if you enjoy
old style fight scenes and a lot of gore. This book, for me, rocked!
